Sofia, Bulgaria
Saturday, September 23 – Transition day–the only day on the trip I was not looking forward to. The fact that we woke up to a steady rain probably didn’t help, but I guess I’d rather have that on a travel day.
Tried to assuage my angst with a solid workout in the hotel gym–it’s not a city playground, but it worked
After breakfast, we took one more quick soggy stroll through the historical center, then headed to the bus station. Bus ride to Vienna was relatively uneventful, except for wayward WIFE, who basically set a moving pick every time Dan tried to board the bus–even though he had scanned his ticket and passport. She seemed a bit befuddled by the whole idea of required travel documents.
Much to my amazement, check in, security AND boarding on Ryanair was a breeze. Silly me, I thought we had escaped unscathed.
That is until we landed and a full fledged scrum ensued. Woman in seat next to me literally tried to climb over me into the aisle. When I wouldn’t allow that (seriously, does anyone think that would happen?) she then kept pushing me into the man in front of me–I finally turned and told her, “I don’t know where you’d like me to go, but there is no room for me there!” Not sure what she decided to do, but the shoving stopped. Also managed to get hit in the head with a suitcase being pulled out of the overhead, but that seemed minor. Never again, I would rather walk than book Ryanair.
In a brilliant move, I had arranged for a car service to take us to our hotel. That, along with some dinner and a glass of white–equilibrium restored. I survived the day!
Tomorrow we explore a bit and then join our tour group in the evening. Not a lot of interesting pictures today, tomorrow I shall try to make up for it.
20,928 steps (half circling the bus station in boredom, likely other half while being pushed), 9.9 miles
Transfer to Airport:
Flix Bus:
Bus 901, Leave Bratislava bus station (easy walk from hotel) @ 1:10PM, arrive Vienna International Airport @ 2:05PM (55 minutes).
Purchased tickets on line from home, paid a couple of dollars extra to select seats.

Arte Hotel Sofia:
Home
Arranged for car service from airport to hotel via e-mail. Paid at hotel. A blessed relief after the trials of Ryanair.
Hotel is well located, in the midst of government buildings and walking distance to most sights as well as a metro station.
Transition day, no sights except for my shocked face when someone attempted to climb over me getting off the plane.
Breakfast:
Excellent breakfast at hotel
Lunch:
A quick sandwich at the Vienna airport.
Dinner:
A sidewalk cafe on the main tourist street in Sofia. Had our first shopska salad and as well as a couple of traditional mains, but mostly I was happy to have a cold glass of white wine after that flight!

Air travel has definitely become not fun, but I sometimes cannot believe the behavior of people. I know Ryanair is low cost, but is that any reason to act like crazed animals?
Glad to be in another new country, looking forward to meeting our guide and the folks we will be touring with!
