Sintra, Portugal
Friday, April 7 – [I interrupt this travel blog to announce Erin is now “Dr Erin”! She successfully defended her PhD dissertation. I might just be a little proud…]
Good Friday. As my post above attests, it was a very good Friday for us! Not a lot of photos today, our minds were elsewhere, several thousand miles away. Nonetheless, there was exploration to be done, strikes or no strikes.
First, a great 4 mile jog as the sun came up. You know what’s great about running first thing in the AM? Well, on the running side, not much, it’s still running. However, especially in a tourist area, it means the only people you encounter are a couple of other joggers and the occasional dog walker–delightful.
After a rather substantial breakfast served by the hotel (who can eat all that??) Dan decided to stay local while I ventured out to Cabo de Roca–the westernmost point in continental Europe. Had an amusing time figuring out the right bus to take, but with the help of a Portuguese woman and Google translate on our phones, I got to the right place. Beautiful views of the Atlantic–next stop over is the Eastern seaboard of the US!
Got back for a light lunch with Dan, then wandered the town and did a little shopping. Unbelievably, crowds were worse than yesterday. Also, walking pace has not improved.
Dan got his tablet linked into Zoom and I sweated through Erin’s presentation–I swear, it was just as nerve-wracking as those stupid spelling bees back in the day! We went to dinner while we awaited the results–got the good news at the end of the meal…a fine end to the day!
Tomorrow–final stop on the itinerary–Lisbon!
