Portugal Trip Day 16

Lisbon, Portugal

Tuesday, April 11 – Another beautiful day in Portugal. Took a different route on this morning’s run, went uphill rather than down (probably a poor choice). Erin went off to her conference and Dan and I decided to head to the national tile museum.

In my trip research, all guidance indicated we should take public transit, but seriously, for 4K? That’s easily walkable in Chris world!

The Museum was actually excellent–the history of “azulejos” was interesting and the tiles themselves are amazing. Definitely worth the walk, though I gave in to Dan’s request to take the bus back, where some guy tried to enter via the rear door and then yelled at the driver when he got hit by the closing door. Like buddy, in zero cities in the world is entering a bus from the back door allowed, prudence dictates you should keep your mouth shut!

After lunch, we headed for the ruins of the Convent de Carmo. Once one of Lisbon’s most distinguished churches, it was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and has not been rebuilt. It now houses the archeological museum of Lisbon.

After that, Dan decided to rest for a bit, but as I am part shark and will die if I stop moving, I went out to wander a bit more. I stopped by the Ingreja Sao Roque, an unassuming 16th century church from the outside which houses a beautiful series of chapels on the inside.

I wandered down the street and popped into the Time Out Market (think Faneuil Hall/Reading Terminal), walked down the waterfront and back through the Praca Comercio to Rossio Square. It was just a beautiful day to be out and about.

When Erin got back from her conference we headed off to dinner together. This restaurant was recommended by our waitress in Sintra and it lived up to her billing. Excellent Italian food in a lovely courtyard. After dessert and coffee, they gave us each a glass of port on the house—gotta love that!

A wonderful evening to cap off a varied but excellent day.
