Saturday, September 30 – Before I post about today’s activities, I need to note that today marks one year since I lost my best friend of 40 years. When I first came to Europe as an adult, she was my travel partner. We were dumb, we made mistakes and we had a ball, making memories I will always treasure. Today’s toasts are all in her honor–miss you Mag!
A beautiful start to the day. Running always seems better when it’s along the beach. Lovely colors as the sun came up over the water.
Breakfast was the worst of the trip so far, but it was adequate and got us ready to head for new adventures.
About an hour away we stopped in the seaside town of Nessebar, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stefan toured us through the archeological museum, describing the various cultures who ruled this slice of the Black Sea over time.
Then it was the parade of churches–all of which were lovely and had a story to tell, but to be honest, I was happy when we it was time for a break and free time.
A bunch of us went to a restaurant Stefan recommended that overlooked the water–we took up several tables. The tour group really seems to have reached that nice “gelled” stage where, while personalities are different, people enjoy doing things together.
After lunch Dan and I decided to walk the route that circles the city along the waterfront. I got to check the water temperature at the little beach, and while it was a little cool for me, I think most people would believe it was refreshing. We rewarded our efforts with gelato cones.
We drove a couple of hours to the seaside town of Varna where we checked into our hotel and had a bit of rest time before our “orientation” walk through town. After that, we were on our own and a group of nine of us headed to the marina for dinner. A fine time was had eating and laughing. One thing that always amazes me on these tours is how people who were complete strangers a week ago can become comfortable sharing meals and experiences so quickly. Every time I think it can’t happen and every time it has. Group dynamics really are fascinating.
Tomorrow it’s a fairly relaxed agenda which is probably good as we start our 2nd week together.
