Varna, Bulgaria
Sunday, October 1 – Wow, the days are flying by–we have already been in Europe 2 weeks. Guess when they are packed full of sights and food and people, that’s what happens.
I know everyone is going to be disappointed, but Sunday is my rest day, so no photos or discussion of my morning fitness routine–you’ll have to come back tomorrow for that.
However, Dan and I did go on a pre-breakfast stroll and got to see the sun come up. Streets were very quiet on Sunday morning after all the revelers we saw last night.
Hotel breakfast was only fair, but they did offer full cups of coffee which was a plus.
This morning we had our guided tour of Varna, which is the naval capitol of Bulgaria.
While that might be the case, our tour seemed to have more churches than ships. We finished with essentially a private tour of the archeological museum (it is generally closed on Sundays). While my brain is now pretty saturated with archeological facts, I will say this museum was well done, flowing in an easy to understand chronological order.
The rest of the day was free time. Several of us lingered over a delicious (and pretty) lunch just across from the museum. Rest of the afternoon was relaxed, doing a little laundry and shopping.
At 6PM a group of us gathered to go out for the evening. The plan was to go to the penthouse bar of a nearby hotel for a drink and the views and then go from there. Well, that is, until we arrived apparently in the middle of a teen karaoke contest. Girls roughly 13-16 singing (mostly badly) at the top of their lungs with the background music at approximately 600 decibels. Yes, we are Boomers but I challenge anyone to withstand that. Anyway, we moved on and found a lovely patio restaurant where we enjoyed drinks, pizzas and laughter. A very fine evening indeed.
Tomorrow we move on from Varna.
