Portugal Trip Day 5

Sao Martinho Porto, Portugal

Friday, March 31 – Was supposed to rain, but, too bad, it didn’t 😀. This time my morning jog was along the beach and on a boardwalk. My joints appreciated the change. As we are in an Airbnb, breakfast was on us, so no amusing anecdotes this morning.

Today we did a little day tripping, monasteries rather than churches. Well, ok, monasteries include churches, but, as the culture of Portugal is very intertwined with the church, to understand the history, you’re going to have to see some churches. Fortunately, for the most part, I can “translate” for Dan🙂.

First to Alcobaca and the story of the doomed love affair between Pedro and Ines. The building itself was fascinating (even Dan had to admit it). Then on to Batahala, to a structure built to celebrate the 1385 victory of Portugal over Spain.

In both places, we were humbled when the folks selling tickets asked, “old persons (65+) rate?” Man, that’ll take the wind out of your sails. I blame Dan!

Back in Sao Martinho, we took an afternoon stroll along the beach. Beautiful day for it, but I was not as brave as the the teens and 20 somethings who were actually swimming. Those kids are just crazy (but they don’t get asked about a special rate at the monasteries…)

Got our laundry folded (apartment has a washer, score!) and had some relax time before an absolutely fabulous seafood dinner in town. Another place with about 10 tables and a small friendly staff where dining is a relaxed two hour affair. And, by the way, you leave having had several courses, wine and coffee for about $80 for two. I could get used to this.

We leave the coast tomorrow and head inland, happy to have uncovered this quiet gem!
