Portugal Trip Day 9

Porto, Portugal

Tuesday, April 3 – Beautiful day. Morning jog along the river (though a few more hills than makes me happy). Delicious breakfast, then a winding path out of wine country (Dan’s clutch leg was working overtime) into Porto, Portugal’s 2nd largest city.

We dropped our rental car at the airport, the rest of the trip will be subject to the whims of mass transit. First foray was on the local metro, where the driver apparently had a binary system–full ramming speed or slam on the brakes. 30 nauseated minutes later, we were downtown and my inner ear was recovering.

Checked into our lodging (I have tried to vary our accommodations on this trip–hotels, Airbnb, a Quinta, and today a true B&B) and headed out for some lunch and exploration.

Our B&B gave us some great recommendations for meals, then we strolled along the river, making it all the way to the ‘Foz’ where the river meets the Atlantic.

When we returned, we had a new cultural experience, the Portuguese laundromat. Actually, it wasn’t bad at all and we met a nice couple from Milford MA to chat with while our clothes spun and whirled.

Dinner at 7:30 (which is late for us but early for the locals, mostly Americans at the restaurant when we arrived). Good food, excellent service and by the time we left, the Europeans had taken over the dining room. A quick evening stroll and we are back to the B&B.

Tomorrow we explore Porto in earnest.
