Marco Island, Florida
Saturday, October 26 – Florida Trip Day 1-Back on the road again, for what has become an annual fall trip south with Nancy and Nancy. No boys this time (who the heck is going to cook?? ). However, I am confident we can muddle through without them.
Since I had a 0-Dark-Thirty flight this morning, we booked a room (thank you Hilton points) at an airport hotel. Had a nice dinner with Dan before setting the alarm for a ridiculous hour.
On a positive note, that meant there was literally no one at TSA, and I breezed right through. The plane was only half full, so there was no boarding chaos, and I actually had an entire row all row all to myself. What was going on??
2nd flight I boarded intent on grabbing the first aisle seat that had room in an overhead bin. Came upon it only to find a dog in a lap in the window seat. Yeah, no, thank you. In addition, there was a cat on the flight. Surprisingly, both animals were better behaved than your typical human passengers. In fact, as much as I like to kvetch about air travel, I really can’t complain. Everything went smoothly.
The Nancys picked me up upon arrival, and we headed to Sanibel. We had a lovely lunch (complete with another canine neighbor), then spent some time strolling the beach. We did pass a guy fishing who actually had caught a bunch from the shore. When I asked what they were, he seemed quite agitated. No worries, buddy, not going to steal some slimy, squirmy fish from your bucket, I’m from Connecticut.
Toured around both Sanibel and Captiva and noted the devastation from the recent hurricanes–very sobering.
Now relaxing back at our Airbnb which is lovely. Pool, lanai, comfortable bedrooms. What more could we ask for? Looking forward to a fun and relaxing week!

3 bedroom ranch with a pool in a residential section of Marco Island. A drive to the beach, but nice area for walking/jogging and close to shops and restaurants.
Driving/walking around Captiva and Sanibel, we saw the damage done by the hurricanes earlier in the fall — we swung by the AirBnb we were originally supposed to stay in in Captiva — definitely not habitable.
Breakfast:
Dunks coffee and a protein bar on the plane along with Southwest Airlines pretzels.
Lunch:
Doc Ford’s:

Nice outdoor patio for casual lunch and beverages. One of the few places open on Sanibel.
Dinner:
A selection of apps that the Nancys had picked up while grocery shopping, perfect after a big lunch and a long day of travel and beachcombing.

Recent hurricanes have really done a number on the Gulf coast of Florida — in addition to the recent damage in Sanibel and Captiva, driving from the airport the effects of the hurricane a couple of years ago was still very evident in Ft Myers
