Greece-Croatia Trip Day 9

Napflio, Greece

Tuesday, September 13 – Final full day in Greece.

Started the day with a jog and a great view of the sun coming up over the hills.

After breakfast, took a road trip back in time. First stop, the 4th c. BC site of Epidavros, a sanctuary built to honor Asklepios, the Greek God of Medicine. The ruins include baths, temples and altars, but its most striking structure is the theater, which has amazing acoustics and is still used today.

We then traveled about 35 minutes and roughly 9 centuries backwards to the ancient archeological site of Mycenae. The history is amazing and the structures impressive, but I must admit, when we got done walking up and down through the sight in the bright sun, I was ‘ruined’ out.

Fortunately, in my trip planning, I came upon a tip for ‘a road less traveled’ route for a lunch locale. The cute little beachside taverna in Asini was just what the doctor ordered–and the portions were just right for a light lunch. We even got a post lunch mastika gratis from the waiter! Mastika is a Greek liqueur which has a slightly sweet pine flavor–we have been meaning to try it!

Back in Napflio I did a bit more gift shopping and we relaxed in the blissful AC. Dan picked the dinner spot and we had a lovely time chatting with some fellow diners and enjoying traditional Greek fare. This restaurant provided a delicious orange liqueur soaked cake after dinner. I could get used to this ‘free stuff at restaurants ‘ concept.

We took one last stroll along the waterfront and caught the most gorgeous sunset over the water—a beautiful way to end a most enjoyable visit to Greece.

Tomorrow we are off to Zagreb!
