Florida, 2024 Day 3

Marco Island, Florida

Monday, October 28 – yesterday was a relaxing day, so today was an active day!! Sun rises a lot later here, so I had to wait it out a bit this morning. Finally decided it was close enough and went out for a jog–plenty of street lights here!

Enjoyed the beautiful colors in the sky as I ran, was surprised that I did not encounter any other joggers or dog walkers. However, the garbage trucks were out early on their rounds.

Upon my return, I heard that we had snow at home, which made today’s temperatures even more enjoyable!

Coffee and breakfast, and we were ready for a walk to the beach. Had a nice walk to the other end of where we were yesterday, which led us to Tigertail Beach. It’s a lovely area with a lagoon, tidal pools, a sand bar, and a refuge spot for sea birds.

Spent some time sitting by the pool before deciding a bike ride was in order. Unfortunately, one Nancy had work meetings so Nancy 2 and I took out the bikes provided by the Airbnb. They are the old fashioned Huffy one speeds from our youth, but realized here in flat Florida, they were fine.

Our goal was Horrs Island, which was supposed to be a significant Archaic period archaeological site featuring one of the oldest known mound burials in the eastern United States and a shell ring. Was a reasonable 4 miles away and sound interesting.

At the end of our 4 mile jaunt was the gated community of Key Marco where we and our bikes were allowed to enter after paying a $5/person entry fee. We saw many expensive homes and many lawn maintenance people. However, the only mounds were those left by local animals, and the only shell ring was the circle of pricey boat shells all wrapped and ready for winter! We did discover the remains of the Captain Horr plantation, which was likely the only structure on the island that cost less than a million dollars to build.

Still, it was great exercise and a bit of an adventure, one we will certainly laugh about in the future.

Once Nancy was done with her meeting (and finished walking into the closed sliding glass door), we took a short stroll to dinner, where we treated ourselves to cocktails and some great seafood and a fun time. Now back at the Airbnb. Going to watch some of the World Series game where Carter is there live and in person. Hoping we can catch a glimpse of him in the left field bleachers!

All in all, an excellent day!

Sights

Tigertail Beach is a lovely enclave a bit north of the main public beaches with tidal pools a lagoon and sea birds.

Horrs Island wasn’t exactly what we expected, mostly a high end housing development with at $5 entry fee, but it was a pleasant bike ride and we did see the remains of the pineapple plantation.
